This review is for the Arbonne It’s a Long Story Mascara. It retails in Australia for $46.
What Arbonne say about this mascara:
“Life is an epic tale – start telling it with your eyes. High-performance lengthening mascara helps create the look of ultra-dramatic lashes with major longitude. Clinically tested and formulated to be water-resistant and longwearing.”
This is, hands down, the best mascara I have ever used. It gives me thicker, longer, blacker lashes with one coat, and while it doesn’t hold curl particularly well it doesn’t weigh down the lashes. It also dissolves easily in water which makes it super simple to remove it at the end of the day. Not only would I recommend this mascara, I would definitely purchase it again!
When applied in the morning this wore all day without flaking, or irritating my eyes, and that is something special because my eyes are very sensitive to makeup. There have only ever been a few mascaras that I have been able to wear for a full day without having an adverse reaction, and this is the best so far. It’s a dramatic mascara. It lengthens, thickens, and separates the lashes (no clumping!). One tube will last up to three months applying it most days. Also, Arbonne is a 100% vegan brand!
I found that after a couple of months of using it every day this mascara began to thicken slightly. Be sure to close the top properly, and don’t pump the wand in and out of the tube because it pushes more air into the product. Instead of pumping the wand, twist it slowly around the inside of the tube to pick up product. This being said, it is very important not to use any mascara for longer than three months. Not only will it not be performing as it should by this time, our eyes are a haven for bacteria and a tube of mascara is the perfect breeding ground!
The Extended Review
The mascara comes in a round, tapered tube. It has a rubber wand with a flexible brush that holds a surprising amount of product. The short bristles do a good job of combing the lashes.
When the brush comes out of the tube it has a tendency to hold too much product, but this is easily solved by wiping it on the top of the tube before using it. As a makeup artist I use disposable mascara wands for my clients, so this is only important when using the supplied brush, which I do for personal use.
This mascara is a true black, with strong pigment, and one coat is usually all I need for day wear.
I apply one to two coats to my clients, depending on the look I want to achieve. One coat is perfect for a day time look. Two coats will give a more dramatic look, and looks great paired with eyeliner or eyeshadow. Just don’t let the mascara dry too much between coats, or the lashes can become spidery. To apply wiggle the brush into the base of the lashes carefully, and then comb through to the ends. In the picture below I have applied one coat, and then two coats with no other eye makeup on.
For this review I wore the Arbonne It’s a Long Story Mascara daily for one week in different conditions, and I can say that it wears well in all kinds of weather, from below freezing 90% humidity! However, if you are like me and you cry and scrunch up your eyes when cutting onions – be careful. This mascara can sting a bit if it runs into the eyes. It holds up fine in light rain though, and is smudge and flake resistant. As I mentioned above, this mascara is perfect for my very sensitive eyes, and this means that I feel comfortable applying it to all of my clients.
As I mentioned above it doesn’t hold curl particularly well, so it’s important to curl the lashes thoroughly before applying the mascara. Thirty seconds on each eye is ideal, and increases the impact of the mascara even more. For a look at the mascara in motion watch my mini video review below, there’s a great close up at 1:10:
Removal is easy. For clients I remove this mascara with a gentle, oil based eye makeup remover. At home I rinse away most of it with water first, and then remove any residue using an oil based eye makeup remover. I use this Arbonne mascara at home, and in my kit when the job doesn’t call for a waterproof one (keep an eye out for my blinc mascara review). The length of wear makes it perfect for all day wear, and this plus it’s dramatic effect makes it ideal for special occasions and nights out. Vegan mascara this awesome is proof that vegan makeup is the bomb!
Arbonne products are only available through consultants, in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and Poland. If you don’t already know one you can easily find one through their website using your postcode (just make sure you choose your country in the language drop down menu) http://www.arbonne.com/.
Makeup Artist tip: With most mascaras, if you get it on the skin of your eyes or face, wait for it to dry and then remove it carefully using a cotton tip. It is much easier to remove these mistakes once they are dry!
Thank you for choosing truly cruelty free products!
